I almost never talk about politics here, and I know at this point you’re probably sick of hearing about the election, and I’m too tired to be either articulate or elloquent tonight anyway. But bear with me for a minute.
It will probably come as no surprise to any of you that I’m an Obama supporter. I’m a small business owner, I’m a woman, I’m an artist, I’m pro-choice, I’m queer, and I’ve been a registered Democrat since the day I turned 18. I’ve gone to see him speak and I’ve read his books, and he strikes me as an intelligent, compassionate man who truly cares about the country and our future. I’ve been supporting him since the NH primaries, volunteering for the campaign when I can, and while I don’t think he’s the One True Savior, I think he will be a damned good president.
I know I’m largely preaching to the choir here, but if you’re still undecided, please do some reading tonight or tomorrow morning. Listen to some of the debates. Read Obama’s statement on how he plans to support the arts, and read what he’s said about helping small businesses — not just those “small businesses” that make $250k or more a year, but the small businesses like mine that make just enough to keep our families fed and pay the mortgage but leave us struggling to afford health care and taxes. Do some soul-searching, and then go out tomorrow and vote from your heart and your conscience. Don’t take your rights for granted. Don’t take anything for granted.
Some last-minute information, snagged from all over the ‘net:
If you encounter any problems when you go to vote, the number to call is 1-866-OUR-VOTE. There are over 750 volunteers equipped with access to local voter registration rolls, election law, and other tools to make sure that the polls are being operated correctly.
Some potential problems may include:
* Polling place is not open when it should be, or is closing early
* You’re told that you’re not registered, or you’re in the wrong precinct
* Voting machines are not working
* Someone is asking for identification or information you don’t think you’re required to give
* You’re told that you have to fill out a provisional ballot
* Someone is acting in an intimidating manner or trying to prevent you from entering the polling place
If you see anything like this happen, or any other problems, call 1-866-OUR-VOTE. And if you see it happening to anyone else, tell them to call the number. This is a truly non-partisan organization - we can help you no matter who you’re voting for. The goal is for an election administered fairly across the board.
Don’t assume that your vote won’t make a difference, or that enough other people will vote the way you would that it won’t make a difference. Go. VOTE. History is in our hands.
